You may notice that some or all of your iPhone iMessages are only showing “chat” when viewing them, pictured above. Typically, you would see a name or number appear in this place. There are several things you can try to restore your iMessage names and numbers. Go to Settings - Messages – iMessage and toggle off / on:.iMessage. When I receive an iMessage notification, it only shows the phone number - not the contact name. It shows correctly in iMessage - when I go to iMessage, all the contact info is showing correct. It's just not showing the contact name in notifications? I've tried some of the basic things such as signing out of iCloud and back in but still no luck.

Sometimes, iMessage won’t show contact names on Mac. When users receive new messages or notifications, all they see if the phone number of the sender.
